baby severums

Question
Hi, I have a male gold severum and a female green severum. They recently for the first time made some eggs( 2 weeks ago). I looked up info on the internet and decided to put the rock and eggs in a seperate small aquarium ( so the parents wouldnt eat them).

Almost 100 hatched and seemed to be doing well. They were all fully swimming, around a week ago, and the past few days I have seen them dying ( probly 20 so far ). I have been feeding them baby brine/shrimp that I hatched myself from a package along with some crushed up flakes. I also tried the frozen baby brine/shrimp today.
BUT...I watch them "eat" and it looks like they just bite it and then spit it right back out... so I think they havent been eating ( which is why they are dying... Im assuming )

Is this normal? Is there anything else I can try? Or different techniques?
Please ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.

~Mike

Answer
Hi Mike!
Congratulations on the Severum spawning!

I'm sorry to hear you've lost so many fry... You may want to try feeding them liquid fry food, which you can find at any LFS (local fishstore) and the fry usually have a better time at eating this than brine shrimp or flakes. When they are about a month old, then fry food powder is best. They may not start eating brine shrimp until you can see their real fins developing.

It is a must with -all- fry and especially little Severums that you change 10% of the water each day and siphon the bottom of the tank as well. It's also best to use a sponge filter (ideally an established one that has been running in another tank) and keep the temperature at around 78F

I really hope this helps!
Best of luck!
Karen~
