Question
Hi, ive just bought a bigger 240ltr second tank as i realised after only a few weeks that my 1st tank is not big enough for the fish that i want to keep, my 1st platy just had 4 fry and is having more already!!!! not a problem as i wanted more and now i dont have to buy them! anyway i was wondering if there is anything from the first tank i can put in to help the cycling process eg a rock or plant etc to help the bacteria, I am very new to all this bearing in mind i have only had my first tank since sept, but ive bought a big one now just in case!! please help xx

Answer
Hi Liz,
You could definitely add some of the gravel, rocks, decor into the tank to help seed it with bacteria but keep in mind even with that much help it will still need time to cycle. At least a few weeks. Adding the old tanks filter onto the new one will help also. But that's only if your current stock in the old tank is not too large and overpowering for your new aquarium. (not sure how many fish you actually have, I know you mentioned a momma platy and 4 babies)
*Remember whatever bacteria source you add, they will need some ammonia source to keep them going. Either add a little bit of fish food or some snails to the setup. Or add a few  fish to get things started. Try to stay on top of the tank's water quality. It'd be ideal if you could test your ammonia and nitrite levels during your tanks early setup to see how things are going. Remember that a 30% water change is the best solution if your fish don't seem well or are acting stressed. Always remember replacement water should be treated with a conditioner and the temp should be either the same or just a bit warmer in temp to the aquarium water.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
Karen~
