White lice looking things on bogwood

Question
Hi Wayne,
I have a small tropical aquarium (bio orb) keeping a few tetras. I have noticed very small (about 3mm long, 2mm wide) oval in shape and white in colour lice looking things on my bogwood, there must be at least 100 of them on bogwood about a foot long.
I have tried replacing the bogwood on water changes but they are obviously in the substrate and come back after a few months.
Do you know of a treatment please? I have tried looking for this problem but most problems are fish related so i cant seem to get to the bottom of it.
I can send a pic if my description is not clear enough.
Many thanks for your help in advance.
Best Regards
Dov

Answer
Hello Dov, I'm not sure so you might want to consult another expert.
You don't say weather they move. I try to research well things I'm not sure of. I could find nothing about any animal that lives on or feeds on driftwood. Therefore they are not lice. The most likely invader is a wood fungus or Beard Algae. Either can be very difficult to get rid of. For the Beard Algae remove the wood and boil it with a few tablespoons of beach added. If you have a fungus (A.K.A. mushroom) it can be even harder. The spores get in the substrate so just cleaning the wood won't get it all. In that case you'd need to boil the wood and take the tank down to clean it with a 19 to 1 ratio of water to bleach. Then rinse very well.
All I could find on this.
but I guess it could be a critter called Daphnia (not harmful to fish). But why they are feeding on the wood I can't say.
