Question
I have a 35 gallon freshwater African cichlid tank and I think I have black ich. Can I treat with salt? I have white sand and no quarantine tank.

Answer
Kim,
Are you sure it is black Ich? I personally, have not heard of fresh water fish getting black Ich. The fastest and safest way to get rid of Ich is to slowly raise the temperature to 85 degrees. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt to every 5 gallons of water. Slowly add the salt water to the tank. Make sure you keep an eye on the fish. If they seem stressed, start removing the salt by doing 50% water changes daily. I have added a website that will take you step by step on how to get rid of Ich.
