Question
Hi Michael...

I have your average 10-gallon tank filled with some livebearers and tetras, etc. I usually leave the light on in the hood from about 2oclock to 8 o clock at night...

I have my heater set on the lowest seting that it could possibly go, and my tank is still reaching temperatures in excess of 86F. I'm worried about my plants and my fish alike.

What should I do??? should I keep my hood light off at all times to prevent any excess heating? or should i just turn my heater off and hope that it stays in temperature range??

Does the fact that its getting cold outside now and we're using more heat in our house have anything to do with this???

thank you
Shelby

Answer
Shelby,
sounds like the contact point in the heater is sticking closed, in other words, the thermostat is sticking.
Rotate the temp control in both directions and try it again.
If it continues to overheat its time for a new heater.
If you need further assistance, just ask.
