Question
i have purchased a 20 gallon aquarium before 10 days. the pet sho owner stocked the aquarium with: 2 goldfish, 2 mollies, 2 shubunkin, 1 snail, 1 suckercat, 3 angelfish & 2 redcap. please let me know whether my aquarium is well stocked? it seems that all the anglefish are not eating anything..when they came they was healthy, but suddenly one of 4 stopped eating and swimming. and it died before 3-4 days. other looking good but cant identify whether they are eating or not...other fishes are doing excellent. i have done 20% water change recently.....(the fish died before the water change). both the filters are doing well...(i give granules that has spirulina in it)

if the breeding happens is it possible that any other fish will eat the small one ? can i add some more of any other fish or my aquarium is overstocked?

Answer
Hi Vimal,
I can bet that your aquarium has not yet cycled. Which definitely would be causing your fish to behave sickly and dying.

Please read here for plenty of valuable info on cycling. Its very important to know all about tank cycling. Without that knowledge, keeping fish healthy long term is close to impossible.

Your aquarium is well stocked already. I think its best you to not add anymore fish at the moment. Try to start doing daily 50% water changes to prevent the ammonia level from rising too much and causing great stress on the fish. Until the tank cycles (in about 6 or so weeks) the fish may be at risk or poor water quality problems. But water changes are the best thing to battle this issue.

The fish that are most likely to breed at this moment are the mollies. And unfortunately, the other fish will likely eat the molly babies. Mollies give birth to live fry about every month or so, depending upon their age/size.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
