Putting a newt in with cichlids?

23 15:56:54

Question
I have a newly purchased newt and right now it is in with three cuban tree frogs but its far too hot in there for the little guy even with water. I'm thinking of moving him into our 50 gallon with several different cichlids like 'golden labs', jack dempsy(small), pleco, and peacock. I do have a turtle ramp for my small yellow belly slider also. My question is: Will the newt be eaten and is the ramp enough for him to be comfortable? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Christina,

Unfortunately, the newt would not be comfortable in a Cichlid tank. Chances are, the Cichlids would most likely bump and nip at the newt. Newts are best kept alone in a species-only setup, or with other amphibians like frogs. The newt will probably not be eaten whole, but may be bitten at and harassed to the point of death.

The newt would be better off in his/her current home, rather than in the Cichlid tank.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
