Question
Help please  we have a 55 gallon tank. the ammonia levels seen to stay up no matter how often we change the water  what are we missing?

Answer
Hi Kathleen,
Make sure the water conditioner you are using isn't causing false readings on your ammonia tests. Most will say if they do or not.

Otherwise, I'd use an ammonia neutralizer water conditioner and change large portions of the water at a time. Small water changes often do nothing to help really high ammonia levels. Something around 50% is best. Make sure to lightly feed your fish as well.

Your tank needs some time to cycle in order for the ammonia level to go down. This usually takes 4-6 weeks or more for the bacteria to get established enough to deal with the ammonia.

I hope this helps!
Karen~
