Catfish dont seem hungry

Question
Hi Rachel,
I have a 10 gallon tank that finished cycling 2 weeks ago.  I currently have 2 glass catfish, a ghost shrimp, and a tiny frog, along with a sword plant.

The catfish haven't seemed very hungry every time I feed them (once daily), so on the advice of the guy at the fish store I switched to cyclid flakes two days ago.  These flakes are huge, compared to the tiny flakes I was giving before, so I dropped two in there the night before last.  3 hours went by and they were still there.  The next morning one flake was gone, but the other remained.  So I pushed the next feeding to the 1.5 day mark.  This time one flake.  They're still not going for it, and now I can see that the flake is about to be sucked up into the filter, so who knows if they even ate any of what was there before.

Am I feeding them the wrong stuff?  They don't seem to do much, except hover underneath the plant, side by side all day along.  Is this normal catfish behavior?

Thanks for any help.

btw, is there a way to search the site for answers to similar questions?  I can't find any search buttons.  Thx.

Answer
I am not sure why a fish store would tell you to feed your fish cichlid food, you do not have any cichlids, do you? If you just have the glass catfish, shrimp, and frog, you do not have cichlids thus there would be no reason to feed your fish cichlid food. Some good foods to try however are regular tropical flake foods, pellets, granuals, and frozen brine shrimp. If the fish are new they will have to adjust to the environment. Chances are they are shy and still stressed. Also, make sure they do not have any diseases or parasites, as this may lead to not eating. Examine them closely to make sure there are no signs or symptoms. You could also try freeze dried foods like tiny shrimp, blood worms, and tubifex worms. Sometimes the fish are very picky. Other than being patient with them and feeding them a variety to see what they like, them not eating is something not much can be done about. If they are not enticed by the food, there is not much to do. Just try some different foods but also be sure to feed tropical fish food. All of the foods I have mentioned are good for all tropical fish. The cichlid food should not be fed to your fish because they are not cichlids. However, the frozen shrimp, tropical flakes, frozen brine shrimp, blood worms, tunifex worms, and all the other foods I have mentioned to try can be fed to all tropical fish. Try some and hopefully one will hit the spot. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.
