Dalmation Molly breeding and care of babies??

23 15:38:00

Question
I noticed a couple weeks ago our dalmation molly was plump and this morning, to our surprise (though I suspected), she had 14 little ones swimming around with her in the tank.  Since it is a community tank with dojos, algae eaters, other mollies, I moved all the babies to another tank so they wouldn't become snacks.  Was this the right thing to do?  How do I care for the baby fish??  The tank is a small 5 gallon with an under gravel filter, with a tube going up the middle and an air stone and hose within the tube attached to a pump.  I've put gravel in the tank along with a few small plants (not live, though open to adding live if that would help).  I've made sure the water level is not quite up to the top of the tube for my own fear that the babies will get in the filtration tube, which I don't think is a good idea, though I don't know.....  Please advise!  2 little girlies at home hope these make it! :)

Answer
Andrea,

Congratulations on the fry. Yes moving them to their own tank was a good thing. Had they stayed in the main tank t hey would have been someone's dinner. As far as what to do, just feed them and do 25% weekly water changes. As soon as they have tripled in size, it should be safe to move them back in with the rest. Just make sure they look bigger than the mouth of your biggest fish. Don't forget the heater. Mollies are tropical fish and need warm water. Yes, watch that the do not get stuck in the intake part of the filter. If you are worried, you can add a sponge filter in their instead, but having the water level lower should help that problem. They are very easy to take care of and as along as everything is don right they should be just fine. Remember, the fry need to eat 4 to 5 times a day for a couple months to ensure they grow healthy. If you have any more concerns or questions, please feel free to ask. That is what I am here for.
