Question
I read the post u put up saying they are brackish and that some fish wont adapt. Finally some usefull information, thanks.  I recently bought 1 for my 55 gal. and about to get another now that i now its a schooling fish and wanted to know if my danios, blood parrot, redtail shark, peacock eel and ropefish will be ok with adding salt?  I tried these sharks before about 5 yrs ago with no luck and now that its been set up for awhile, trying again.  I really hope you can help me.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Mike, (Thank you for the nice comments!)
Silvertip Sharks are very unique catfish in that they may do well in freshwater while young. But as they grow they really require more and more salt. If they don't get salted (brackish) water they can develop dangerous skin conditions and they just won't thrive as well.
Silvertips should really be gradually converted over to brackish water as soon as you can. It's generally recommended for young fish to have a salinity level of 1.005 or so and than later building it up to 1.015 or more when they are larger (some even say pure saltwater conditions).

Unfortunately your other fish, the danios, parrot, redtail shark, peacock eel, and ropefish won't be able to tolerate brackish water. This is why Silver tips sharks are really best suited their own large aquarium (they can grow to 12") with other brackish water fish like Scats or Monos.

I hope this helps!!!
Silvertips are a very beautiful catfish, they just have special needs to be healthy and thriving...
Best wishes,
Karen~
