Siamese algea eater

Question
I have 2)plecos 14" long in my freshwater aquarium and I was reading up on SAE.  Are they a good alternative for eating algea?  My tank is 80 gallons.  I use a canister filtration system.  I have blue gourami, angel fish, giant danio, black widow tetra, Mollies, plates, cory, clown loach, kuli loach, and pegesus catfish, as tank mates.  The plecos are getting too large and I'd like to put in something smaller, that doesn't poop as much and disturb the plants with a whoosh of their mighty tail.

Answer
Hi Danna,
Yes, in fact siamese algae eaters do well as algae eaters and they do not grow too large.  They usually top out at around 4-5 inches and SAE's are quite adaptable. They even do excellent in a planted aquarium.
Just make sure you do not confuse them with the somewhat similar Chinese algae eater. Which grows far too large and actually lessens his algae eating tendencies when he grows and often becomes aggressive towards the other community fish. Fortunately they aren't too hard to tell apart.

One of my personal favorite algae eaters is a pleco species. But not the  giant pleco species you have. It's the Bristlenose Pleco. Here's what these wonderful fish look like-

These are good algae eaters. They are completely peaceful, don't grow past 4 inches and are easy to care for. They usually aren't that hard to find. But they are well worth having. The albino bristlenoses are very unusual in appearance. Females are easy to tell apart because they lack as many bristles as the male. A smaller pleco also means not as much pooping. ;-)

Either fish are very good and I highly recommend them!
Best of luck!
