Question
i have three sliver sharks at home with 2 platys,3blood fins,4 glo light tetras, some guppes and a cat fish and all of a sudden my guppies turn up dead and some of my smaller fish turns up missing so could my 3 sliver sharks have eaten them

Answer
Hello,

It is unlikely that your fish were eaten. It is possible that they died and decomposed overnight, or before your noticed.

When numerous fish begin to turn up dead or missing, usually (but not always) it is caused by a problem in the water. Have you checked your nitrites and ammonia recently? If not, I would recommend doing so as both are common fish killers. You can purchase test kits at pets stores if you do not already own some.

If that turns out not to be the cause, check several other things:
1) That all your equipment (heater, filter ect.) is working properly and your tank is staying at a consistant temperature.

2) That you are not adding too much of any chemical (which could cause an overdose and the death of your fish).

3) That there is not excessive amounts of chlorine in your tank.

4) That there are no obvious symptoms of disease. These may include (but are certainly not limited to): bloating, wasting away, not eating, loss of color, odd swimming, white spots on the body, white cauliflower-like tufts on the body, hazy eyes, protruding eyes, torn/ragged fins or greyish slime on the body.

I hope this helps.

Stephanie
