growth on my angel fish

Question
I have noticed a very sudden ubular pink growth on my angel fish - looks like something extruding from his anal area,  It is about 1/4" long, curved upward, and about 1/8" in diameter.  It almost looks like a penis.  I have never seen such a thing before.  He/she has a good appetite and seems otherwise fine. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Alison,

Do you have more than one angelfish in the tank? They may be trying to spawn. Both male and female angelfish have "breeding tubes" called ovipositors. The female's ovipositor is larger and more blunt than the male's which is slender and more pointed. You can read more about it here under Spawning:

But you can also Google angelfish ovipositor for lots more hits. There's tons written about angelfish breeding.

Interestingly, angelfish are impossible to sex with 100% accuracy until they get ready to mate. So now is the time to find out whether yours is male or female for sure!

Take care,
Nicole
