Question
QUESTION: Hello there - i'm fishsitting a goldfish right now and yesterday i moved my fish from his traveling bowl to his aquarium (i'm at college) - When i first put him in the aquarium he acted normally - he is usually a very energetic and friendly fish.  However, a few hours later he started to become strange - he would float around towards the bottom with his fins pulled in and not really do much of anything - usually when you get near the tank he immediately goes to the edge and looks for food...i thought maybe he was sleeping but it was still strange - so i added more water purifier thinking that could be the problem...but maybe that was bad, because i could've put too much in.  And even this morning when i fed him, usually he eats all of his food very quickly but this time he was slow and it seemed like he couldn't quite swim up to the top of the tank...i think he's a little bit more normal now, but i'm still very worried about him.  Should i take him out of the tank and redo all of his water?  It still seems like he's having a little trouble swimming too....thanks for any help or advice!

ANSWER: Hi b.a.:  I would do a partial water change and not add conditioner to the new water.  Goldfish are strange fish... they have recently discovered that they have memories... He is probably reacting to a new environment as well as the new water...  just be social with him and try to feed him some snacks... they like green foods like spinach... hope this helps...dave

QUESTION: Dave, thanks for all your help.  We've taken your advice, but something still seems off.  The fish seems to be more energetic and maybe hungry, but it looks like he's having a lottrouble swimming and won't eat. He's alert, but swims on an angle with his tail pointed down.  I've also noticed he has two small bumps on his nose on top of his head which is also new.  In addition, I noticed a foul fishy smell in the water which wasn't there before.  I tried cleaning out the filter and doing a partial water change like you said.  I don't know if this is normal or if this is something unusual.  Thanks again for all your help.

Answer
Hi b. a. :  Fish are equipped with a swim bladder... and his may have become off balance during the move.  Try to feed him a frozen green pea...thawed of course... and see if that helps... the idea is for him to poop. Goldfish are susceptible to intestinal blockages and one of the symptoms of that is they begin to swim funny or they float up-side-down, etc.  Two things work to help clear that up... green peas, and live brine shrimp  but if he is not eating....  You could medicate him for internal parasites... I would just see if he calms down a bit and goes back to normal... stress in fish causes many symptoms... you could add aquarium salt which would help or even a dose of tetracycline...which is an antibiotic.  I'm surprised that the new water smells already....  keep me posted... dave
