Question
My bf and i are arguing on whether our tank is too full and i hope you can bring it to an end. I say that we have way too many fish and he says we can fit more. We have a 29 gallon tank that has been running for about six months. It is 24 inches long 12 wide and 18 high. We have 5 weather loaches, 6 neon tetras, 5 zebra danios, 2 African frogs, 4 guppies, 3 goldfish and 2 algae eaters. We also have a heater that is set at 82 degrees, the proper filtration, and a 16 inch bubble wall. There and 2 castles to hide in and plenty of open water to swim in, and we have plastic plants. Is our tank too full?

Answer
Hi Kels:  The deal is this... you are both right... though honestly im surprised your goldfish are still living... they are cold water fish and do not usually like the temperature to be above 76 degrees... if you lower the temperature the tropical fish will get sick...and if you keep the temperature up at 82 the goldfish will get sick... so you are going to have to separate them.

Your bf is right that you can add more fish... and you are right that the tank is full... how can this be??? well he is right ... now and you are right when the fish all finish growing.  The weather loach are going to reach about 6-10 inches in length... im hoping that the african frogs you have are the dwarf frogs...because if not... they will reach about 5 inches in length... the goldfish will and can grow up to 8-10 inches in length and the plecostomus will each reach about 18 inches in length... so in the future your tank is too full... If for some reason you decide to add more fish... I would only add a few... hatchet fish since like guppies they are top level fish.  your mid level is full as is your bottom level... If it were my tank... I would separate the goldfish and not add anymore fish at all... hope this helps... dave
