goldfish and breeding

Question
I bought 2- 25 cent  orange goldfish five years ago for my daughter on her
birthday. they are now about 7 inches long , in a 35 gallons tank, with two
other black goldfish. Discovered about two years ago that
the orange goldfish were a couple. I had a lot of eggs floating and sticking to
everything. The first couple of times I left them alone to see what would
happened. My water went cloudy and then I had a algae problem and no live
births. So decided I would try to limit the amount of times this happened. So I
raised the temp to about 72 degree (which seen to help decrease the
frequency of these events)Question is there anything else I can do, to slow
down these events. Because when it does happen. I have to almost scrub
everything in the tank to remove the eggs, which causes me to lose my
beneficial bacteria, then the fish are distressed as the tank recycles itself. Or
is there a safer way to remove these eggs. I`m not really interested in having
more fish. Just want to keep the ones I got!
thank-you for your help

Answer
Hi Kim
Wow,
It is incredible how easy your goldfish are breeding. And its a wonder why the goldfish don't just eat all the eggs after laying them. I don't think you will have to worry about a lot of babies and extra goldfish because if the eggs do hatch, I'm sure the adults would eat the wriggling fry.

You shouldn't have to scrub everything to get any eggs out. I would just leave them and if they hatch, they will be eaten most certainly. The water cloudiness and algae problem likely is not really due to so many eggs but rather an underlying water quality issue caused by the pollution given off by the goldfish.

I don't think you have a huge problem here. I don't think any fry would survive to adulthood if any were to even hatch.

There's not much you can do to prevent them from spawning. Temperature changes seem to trigger spawning the most and most goldies spawn in the spring time with rising temps.

They should get past their spawning season soon.

Hope this helps!!
