oscars and jack dempsey lighting

i have just purchased an oscar and a jack dempsey and  could'nt remember if they needed constant lighting,as in 24 hours a day

Hi Shawn;

Unless there are live plants, the tank lights are actually for us. You only need them on when you are home and want to see the fish or they are feeding. The fish do take a rest period at night, sort of like sleeping, so in my opinion it's good to have the lights off during the night time. Especially if algae is getting a foothold. Less light and algae grows less.
