Fish are compatible?

Question
Hello Nathan,

Can I keep Neon Tetras with Serpae Tetras? I saw the latter in a fish store, and they are quite attractive. I have a 10 gallon tank with 6 Neon Tetras.

Thanks, Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

Unfortunately, Serpae Tetras are not compatible with your current aquarium setup for two reasons:

Firstly, your aquarium has reached its capacity for holding fish. A 10 gallon aquarium can't hold much fish, and adding more will put stress on the biological filter (the beneficial bacteria living in the filter which help remove toxic wastes). Don't overstock - your fish tank is perfect the way it is. 6 Neon Tetras are just right.

Secondly, Serpae Tetras are not compatible with Neons. Serpae Tetras have a tendency to nip at, and bite the fins of smaller fish. The Neons will be victim to the bullying of the Tetras.

I hope this helps!

Happy Fishkeeping!
