Question
Hi,I have recently introduced a new fish to my small coldwater tank,I know that they have whitespot,I have only got 3 fish in there and I don't want to lose any of them, before I go and buy white spot treatment I was wondering if I can use King British disease clear to tret them?I have done one treatment already and they are due for the next one today,I have noticed that the mainly affected fish has alot less white spot on him so I didn't know whether to carry on using this traetment or to go and buy white spot treatment, the fish are still rubbing and flicking and hiding so I don't know if it is working or not.The main active ingredient in this disease clear is silver proteinate.Thankyou Ruth.

Answer
Hi Ruth
I'm in the US, so we don't have that product here.  I remember looking up some of those products before, and having a hard time finding out what the actual ingredients are.  But looking at the products online, that treatment is more geared for bacterial and fungal infections.  I'm not familiar with silver proteinate, so I can't say if it'll treat that or not.  Most of our meds for ich here in the US contain either malachite green or formalin as the main ingredient.  I would go ahead and buy the Whitespot treatment and use that if you want to be on the safe side, or continue with that product and see if it continues to get better.  Sorry, it's hard with having different meds to use....Also you could try to raise your temp in the tank a bit as well, usually it's recommended to raise it to at least 82F, 27-28C.  That helps speed up the ich life cycle, so the meds can kill them off faster.  Ich is only killed during it's "free swimming" stage of life.  Also be sure to vacuum your gravel/substrate real good with the gravel vacuum/syphon.

Good luck!
