Filter media

Question
Hi Nathan,

How long should I change the filter media in my AquaClear 20 power filter? I've heard that it's once per month, but am not quite sure.

I have a 10 gallon fully cycled tank with 5 Neon Tetras.

Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
Hi James,

When to change your filter media depends on how much the tank is loaded (The number of fish). Generally, the media needs to be changed every 2-4 weeks. Your tank has 5 Neons, which is a pretty light load. That means that you should change your filter media every month.

However, since you have an AquaClear, it is only the CARBON bag that needs to be changed every month. The foam only needs to be gently rinsed with tank water (tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria) every month. The BioMax media does NOT need to be changed.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
