Betta fish internally bleeding?

Question
Hi I'm Kevin, i just wanted to know what is up with my Betta. He is a yellow male Betta. This morning I got up and fed him when I noticed a red spot near his gill a little smaller than the size of a dime. He seems to be swimming fine and he also ate well. Is he internally bleeding or is it normal for bettas to do this?
Thanks, Kevin...

Answer
Kevin,
It could be his coloring, but it could also be an ammonia or nitrite burn. When you test the water, what are the readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrates? How often are you doing the water changes, and what size tank is he in? Does he have a filter, and if he does, was it cycled before you put him in? Do you have a heater, and if so, what is it set at? All of the answers are going to help me figure out what is going on. I will wait to hear back from you.
