Are these compatible?

Question
I recently got a 20 gallon tank to replace my 5 gallon. I want to keep GloFish in the new tank, as I had those I my other tank and like them a lot. I also want to keep some guppies and maybe some zebra danios or platys. Could I keep cherry barbs with them?

Answer
Hi Kate,

My apologies, I misread the word Glofish to say goldfish.  I'm embaressed, lol.  I'm 46.  My glasses are missing. It's not a case of knowledgeless blonditis, it's more a case of myopic blonditis. :)

Glofish!  Okay!  Here's my revised answer to your original question:

I raise them.  I have been raising Zebra Danios a long time now and in answer to your original question, yes, Glofish are compatible with all of the above, in fact, they are Zebra Danio.

They are wonderful pets.  They breed quite easily.  If you ever require breeding info for your zebras, please go ahead and ask.  You may watch mine spawning at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XCGxhPZ-T8

Happy fish-keeping.

Hi Kate,

If you keep goldfish in the new tank, I don't suggest more than 1, as 1 goldfish requires about 25 gallons to survive without filthy water as an adult.  They are very big poopers. :)

If it's a juvenile, you can get one and add barbs and danios and of course, platys, but you should check water quality often because the goldfish will again, be a very heavy pooper.

They are wonderful pets.  Although they are for ponds, they're sold in captivity often and are cute to watch and very pretty, but they also have needs and necessities that go alongside them that other fish do not.

I hope this helps answer your questions.  In short, yes, a goldfish is fine along with a few other fish, as long as you do monthly water changes and heavily filter the water.

Happy fish-keeping.
