Betas and Guppies?

Question
Hi, I have a smaller tank I would say 3-5 galleons and i have a beta in it. I was wondering if it would be ok to put a couple guppies in the tank with him? If not what kinds of fish can i mix wit my beta?

Thanks

Amee

Answer
Hi Amee,

If the tank is 5 gallons (with a filter, of course), then you could put two guppies in it.

If it's 3 gallons, but has good filtration (at least 30-35 gallons per hour), then you could put two guppies in it as well.

If your tank does not have good filtration (under 30 gallons per hour, or no filter at all), then you can't put anything more into the tank.

Guppies can be easily mixed with Bettas, without any problems. If the guppies are fin-nippy (very small chance), then you could put some plants in there to make the guppies feel more at home.

If you are going to get guppies, get all males, because if you have both, they will start breeding (they will breed easily no matter what), and males are more colorful. Don't buy all females, because females can store a male's sperm for up to three months, which means that your female could have lots of babies without a male!

Suggestions for Other fish/invertebrates you could put in: (MAX 2)
-Swordtail
-Zebra Danios
-Apple Snail (the pretty golden ones)

These are very hardy and colorful.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
