Question
Hello! I have a 55 Gallon Aquarium and 10 goldfish in it and two small plecos. I also have a 40 gallons aquarium which I will set up soon to make more room for my pets and add a couple more. I have two filters in my 55 gallon fish tank; one is double and the other one is single. I change water every week and add all the necessary chemicals to keep the water healthy. I have many concerns. I always have to put amno lock before the end of the week and carefully feed them to not give them too much or too little. The PH is always law according to the test kit is between 6.6 to 7.2 and I add the PH adjuster to 7.5 but it does not go up to 7.5. I also add the indicated salt amount in the instructions when I changed the water couple days ago. First: I wonder how come the water was extremely cloudy even after 4 consecutive changes???? Somebody in the pet store told  me it was sperm. I brought water sample of my tank to the store. Second: What are does white spots on four of my gold fish that are only seen under the florescent light? Third: If this is the spawning time (like someone told me in the pet store), where are the eggs they lays? I woke up early  everyday to see if I caught any one, but have no luck with it. I haven't see any yet. Also I am always checking on them to see if I can save some good eggs. Fourth: from what date to what date is the best breeding time? Fifth: Why I can't make it happen? I bought small crib like with holes (That someone in the pet shop gave me. It was supposed to be for breeding purpose) to put the eggs in if I see one, but I trapped one fish That I think is the female because she was the one chased a lot the other day, and put her inside this "crib" like. But since I saw her so stressed out trying to get out of there, I decided to take her out. PLEASE HELP HERE ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Answer
Hi Amalin,

You obviously care tremendously about the goldfish to go to this extent to keep them and are already aware of their needs, spacewise, to compensate for their heavy waste, so I want to start off by congratulating you on your efforts.  You are a top aquarist, in my book, for going to this extent to help your fish.

It sounds like spawning behavior to me.  Chasing one female...cloudy water...they're breeding.

Don't remove your female fish.  She is gravid with eggs.  She's got to lay them.  Let her loose.  Chasing is part of their breeding process.  She needs that. :)

When you see eggs, remove them and put them into the little basket.

http://www.happy-goldfish.com/blog/breeding-goldfish/ is a good link for you to read. So is, http://reocities.com/tokyo/4468/breeding1.html which shows the eggs, although they should never be green like that!  Those are rotting eggs.  They will, instead, be small white eggs.

The small spots on some fish are tubercules.  They are distinguishing male from female.

The ONLY thing I see in your description which might warrant a change is PH issues.  You don't have any so salt isn't necessary.

Breeding times are when the temps get warm til it gets cool again. Goldfish are very easy to breed.

The female has to be released. :)

I hope this answers all your questions.  Please feel free to email back anytime.

Happy fish-keeping and two thumbs up for you, Amalin, keeping such good care of your fish!
