Yellowish Cloudy Water

Question
I have a 10 gallon tank with a undergravel filter and a bio-wheel hang over filter. I do partial water changes about half the water every 2 weeks and the next day it is yellow and cloudy again. I mean when I do the partial it doesn't clear it up all the way anyway but it helps a little. I don't know why it stays yellow and I just recently put the undergravel filter system in to try and see if that would help but it didn't. I have been having this problem for 1 year now. I have lost 4 fish due to it, I have 4 fish left and they are 1 plattie, 1 molly, 1 glow guppy, and 1 dream cycle. Can you please help me and tell me what to do so the water will be clear again? I feed them once a day and its the tetra tropical food flakes........Thanks Sarah

Answer
Dear Sarah,
First, I would only use the  bio-wheel and remove the under gravel filter.  Sometimes under gravel filters can trap food particles and fish waste and create a toxic water problem for your fish.  I think it would help alot if you started doing water changes every other day until things clear up.  Take out about 1\3 of the water and be sure to use a really good water conditioner that removes ammonia, chlorine and chloramine.  When you feed your fish be sure to not feed too much.  Most fish only have a stomach about as large as their eye so it is really easy to over feed and not realize it.  Also, if you want to, you could purchase a water test kit to see if your water is in the safe margin for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I've always been able to correct most fish problems with more frequent water changes and hopefully this will help you too.

Hope this helps!
