moldy driftwood

Question
I have a piece of driftwood in my 55 gal tank for the past 5-6 months. Suddenly it looks moldy. It looks like small black tufts on it. So I am not sure if that is mold or algae. If it is mold do I need to boil it or something? Will it be harmful to my tank to just leave it alone? And finally, should I add a plecostomus fish to help keep the driftwood clean? I currently have no algae eater fish in the tank.

Answer
Stacey,
sounds like some sort of algae, and yes a pleco would do well in your tank. Plecos should always have driftwood to rasp on.
Frankly, if there was going to be a problem with the driftwood it would have occurred by now.
If you wish, you could take it out and rinse it off for your own piece of mind.
If you need further assistance, feel free to ask.
