Question
My platy fish has loss of balance and is not eating.  He is having  a hard time breathing..I put the platy in a separate tank.
 What do I do ?

Answer
First things first you need to test your main tank for ammonia to rule this out.  Ammonia is extremely toxic and can cause a whole list of negative reactions in fish.  If everything is fine there, you may be looking at an infection, such as dropsy or swim bladder issues.  Dropsy is incurable, but because you didn't mention swelling, I very much doubt this. If the fish has swim bladder problems, there is a simple way to fix it in many cases. Take a soft, cooked pea, crush it and feed it to the fish. This normally solves the problem within a few hours. If this does not work, do not feed the fish for a few days, since fasting should also clear any food impaction. Inflated swim bladders can also be caused by over-feeding the fish. In which the best course would be to fast the fish by not feeding them for at least a day. Fish can live quite happily without food for several days. In some cases there is an underlying condition causing the swim bladder problem, such as infestation by parasites or bacteria. It can also be caused by tuberculosis or cancer in organs near the swim bladder. Hope this has helped, let me know if the condition worsens.
