Question
I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 adult Mollies.  A couple of months ago, one gave birth to 4 babies.  On Tuesday, another one have birth to 14 babies.  The new mother (or so I think) now has one eye bulging.  From what I've read on line, some say to do water changes.  Other say to treat with medication.  Which do you recommend and if I use medication will it harm the babies?

Thanks!

Beth

Answer
Beth,
It could just be that she injured her eye. How much salt do you have in the water? If you have all those fish in one tank, you are very over crowed and it will be hard to keep everyone healthy. The fry, babies, should be in their own tank with a filter (cycled) and a heater. Since the fry are only 2 days old, I would not recommend a water change. Just remove the injured fish and put her in your hospital tank and treat her there. This way, if you have to use medication, the fry and other healthy adults will not have to be in medicated water. The fry are too young to have medication of any kind. I do not ever medicate my fish because I use heat and salt. Since these are molly fish, they have to have salt in their water.
