oscar fish and filtation

Hello Joe - I am having trouble with my dear oscar fish.  He is about 6" and growing.  He lives with a 8" pleco.  My problem is the filter system that I have is the water-fall type.  Oscar loves to throw sand with his tail and he spits the sand (it's a sandy bottom) into the filter which constantly makes it click off.  Do you have any suggestions for another kind of fitler system.  It is a 55 gallon tank.

Oscars will tear up any tank, so the best filter system to have is a cannister type, like a Fluval 405.
That will take care of things for you!
Eventually, you will need to upgrade to a 75 gallon tank or more. Oscars grow to 15 inches.
