setting up for freshwater and new to this

Question
I have a few questions that need to be answered so that I do this right the first time.
info know you will need:
1. 10 gallon tank.
2. filter system.
3. heater.
4. fish type: plan for approx.4 max. American Cichlid species of the placid to semi-aggressive such as a Cockatoo dwarf to a blue Acara and one algea eater when the time comes necessary.
I do know that I will have to iniatate a cycle since everything is new and do not have the proper bacteria present. I will start with one fish to initiate the cycle. I am sure it will have to be fairly hardy to withstand the imbalnce at the start.
1. What whould you recommed that will get along when it is okay to add my intended co-occupants?
2. Should I also purchase an areator as well?
thanks in advance,
tom

Answer
Hi -
My page for wholistic aquarium care should come in handy:
http://steamboats.com/aquarium.html
Please read it and print it out for future reference.
Buy a bottle of Cycle, which provides the bacteria. Follow the instructions on the label and keep it in the refrigerator between use.
You can usually start much faster. Continue to use Cycle when you change the water.
Not sure how the fish will get along. Consult the sales staff at your aquarium supply shop. Note that plectostomus can grow more than a foot long. The can live 7 - 10 years, so if you get a plecto, you may end up buying a larger tank at some point.
Use bottled water unless your water supply is very pure.
Avoid over feeding, since that is what causes all the problems.
Yes, might as well get an aerator. The fish appreciate it. Also, remember to have hiding places for them. You can buy a piece of slate or glass,or a thin rock at the aquarium supply shop. 10 gallons is not very much space, so try to get something minimal that will leave plenty of space for the fish.
Hope this helps. Further details at my web page. Write back if you want to discuss further.
