Question
QUESTION: I have a 45 gallon tank, 5 yrs old, housing one angel, one jewel and four blood parrots.

One parrot has changed color to white 8 months ago. For last 30 days it lays by side of the tank, close to filter. Its lower fins(pelvic) do not move, while other fins are moving. It now lies upside down at the bottom of tank - alive. Occasionally, it tries to swim around the tank but is unable to stabilise itself and soon turns upside down. Recently, it is unable to come to surface for feed.

Tank Parameters: Temp - 32 deg. Cel.,

Background:In summers around 2 months back, the tank temp. rose to 37 deg cel and remained for around 30 days. Tank is cycled and 2/3rd water is changed every 14 days.

Pls help suggest treatment or any other procedure that needs to be followed to help save the beautiful fish.

ANSWER: Jagpreet,
It sounds like he is having problems with his swim bladder. This can happen of the fish is being overfed. Some say it can happen during feeding. When going to the surface for the food it gulps down some air. It could also be illness. Unfortunately without having a picture it is hard to tell what is going on. Remove him from the main tank and put him in your hospital tank. Remove some of the water so that he can get to the top for food. Try feeding him a cooked shelled pea. Make sure you are doing your water changes every week. Do not wait 14 days before changing water. If you can, upload a pic of the fish so that I can see him and make a better decision.

Answer
He is definitely having swim bladder issues, and he looks quite bloated. The pea should help with the constipation, and you can also try an Epsom salt bath. This is help draw out the fluid. The ratio is 1 teaspoon of dissolves salt to one gallon of water. Make sure this water is the same temperature as the water he is already in and make fresh salt water each time. Never use the same salt water twice. DO this twice a day for about 7-10 minutes. Make sure you stay with him in case he starts having problems and needs to be removed. He looks pretty bad and I am not sure you will be able to save him, but try the salt bath and the pea and let me know how things are going.
