Question
Hi, I have a Fighter Fish (I think its a Japanese Fighter Fish), and when I was about to clean its tank my cat jumped up and knocked the bowl down and now my fish has a pretty serious gash in between its head and its top fin and it looks really bad.  It's still alive but Its lying on its side and not moving around much.  I have added some stress coat products that they they help repair tissue damage and I have also added a very small amount of salt because some websites say that it could help.  I want to know if their is anything other that I can do to help my fish because I really do not want it to die.

Answer
Chris,

I believe you have done exactly what you should be doing. As long as you keep up the treatment and have added aquarium salt, the recovery should be quick if the damage isn't too severe. If the fish does not seem to respond to any treatment (i.e. looks like it is still suffering severely) within a week, it is probably best to put your fish down. The most humane way and painless way to do this is to get a baggie, fill it with enough water for your fish, and put it in the freezer. Just as humans do, the fish will fall asleep from the cold and die peacefully with no pain.
