Question
I tried to put 2 betas in a temporary-divided 10 gallon tank, felt little bowls was cruel.Tank was clean and ready for the fish. The 2 betas were divided, but must have felt each others vibes. The betas rammed the divider down, were together long enough to have fins flying all over!!!Both now separated in 2 different 10 gallon tanks with filters, doing good, eating, etc. How long does it take for the fins to completely come back, or do they come back? The fins on the one beta were beautiful.I tried to give them a bigger space temporarily, separated, and they fought threw my divider-I am so sad!Want to help get their fins back!My question is:How long to regrow fins if they do, and how can I help speed up the process in a healthy way for them? I appreciate your time in advance. 10 gallon tanks, temp-76 to 78 degrees 1 beta per 10 gallon aquarium, each has their own setup with filters.  Thanks, Cindy M

Answer
Cindy,

I applaud you for keeping your Betta Fish in the proper sized aquarium and not a small jar or bowl. I wish I could give you a hug (=D). Was your divider clear, by any chance? Male Betta (as you have figured out for yourself) are known to be EXTREMELY aggressive (hint: Japanese Fighter Fish) - and seeing another male sends that anger running.

The fins should grow back. I suggest putting the recommended amount of aquarium salt in their tanks (it helps speed up recovery and is a general stress reducer). Also, you can go to your nearest pet store and see if they have any remedies to help your situation (I can't quite recall the name of one, but it is in liquid form and it is meant to help the recovery of torn fins and tails - but not for fin rot. Comes in a brownish colored bottle and it has a blue and red label on it.)

The fins may not grow back the full length they once were, but they will be able to grow back beautifully and maybe a little duller than what they once were.

But you sound like an excellent fish owner. Keep up the good work!
