does a pacostamus only eat algae or does it eat other things? my tank is 55 gallons

Hi Becky.

A plecostomus will eat an assortment of things, including, but not limited to:Algae, flake food, pellets, or dead fish. Contrary to popular belief, they do not eat fish waste.

You might want to see if you can get a diffent type of plecostomus. They can grow well over 18 inches, and are not suitable for a 55 gallon. I reccomend clown, rubberlipped, and bristlenosed plecos for tanks under 100 gallons.
