Sexing Flame Gourami?

Question

Fish 1
It said you know about bettas and gourami are in the same family so maybe you can help:
I have searched all over and the only answer I can find is "males have pointed fin females have round" I have two flame gourami's in a 75 gallon and they are the only thing in the tank (bought them as my cycling fish) They are both bright red with nice blue color on there dorsal fins. They are about 2+ inches and are silver from their feelers to eyes and are fairly slim build. Both have rounded dorsal fins but here is the kicker... They have both built bubble nests on either end of the tank. I have found no info to suggest females will build a nest, so is it definite that they are both males? Also if I chose to breed them can I do so by buying a different color gourami like neon blue or powder blue? How do I make sure next time I get the correct sex?

Thank You for any input you might have,
Michelle

Answer
Hi Mishelle,
You definitely have two males.  Females do not blow nests.  It is quite difficult to sex these cute little fish.  The only sure way is to see them together when spawning. The male is then more colourful.  The pointy fins, and round fins does not apply to all fish.  Gouramis breed only with their own.  This is good because cross-breeding if it would occur, would deliver sterile fish, and many little deformed fish.
These little fish are peaceful, even during the spawn.
Hope this helps
