Question
My Red Devil is 11 years old and has been alone in his current
5'x2' for the past 5 years. Just recently he has been hanging
about the surface splashing and poking his tail out, and
develpoed a lump.  It has since burst and the wound is very
messy and  looks deep . its about the size of a five cent piece!!
he is now not eating and has retreated to his cave.  He will only
come out when annoy him enough.  I have been treating him
with Melafix (6 days now) and am worried it isn't really doing
anything to help heal him.  i age any water changed monthly.
I've had the water tested at my local aquarium and is ph and
hardness checked.

Answer
Hi Josef;

Usually a lump that breaks open indicates an internal infection. Melafix really doesn't cure infections, but don't stop using it because it helps heal and soothe damaged tissues. The medicine to use is called "Maracyn 2". Kanacyn is good for internals too but it has been hard to find in some areas. These meds absorb inside the fish where infection is. Others treat only the outside.

I hope he feels better soon......
