huge goldfish

QUESTION: Hi Jack,
Our goldfish is now almost 8 years old and over 9 inches long.  She lives in a 10 gallon tank with two filters just to keep the water clean.  Because of her size, I am thinking she needs to move to a pond.  I can't seem to prevent the water from stinking anymore.  Suggestions?

ANSWER: Hey Mary, first of all well done for looking after your goldfish.  They normally die before they are three due to bad ownership.

Back to your question,  Do you mean the pond water smelling or the tank water smelling,

QUESTION: Hi Jack,
Thank you for your speedy reply!  I meant that the water in our fish tank smells foul, probably because Erica's waste is too much for the ten gallon tank.  Am I right?  Or could it just be that it all needs a light bleach cleaning with a 10% solution?

Hey again Mary,

well poor Erica is a bit crowed in your tank, goldfish need a minimum of 20 gallons to them selves so I suggest now get her a bigger tank or place her in a pond where she will be much happier.

And yes you are right, it is probably her waste that is causing the smell, as i said please move her for her sake,


I hope you many happy years together, i am amazed she has lived for 8 years.
