QuestionHello,
I am treating a goldfish for ammonia poisoning (large water changes, increased airation, temporary ammonia neutralizer...) he is lethargic and his gills seem red.
Will he make a full recovery? Or have I just ruined this poor little guy's future?
I was just wondering if this type of damage is pernament.
Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

AnswerHello Annie -
It depends on how long he was exposed to the ammonia and how high the levels were. pH is also a factor. Red gills are a serious sign, but sometimes fish can return to normal. Most fish can stand ammonia levels up to 1 ppm without permanent damage. The best thing to do would be to get him in 0 ppm water as soon as possible.
Hope this helps,
