My Male Beta Sick

Question
Hi!
I purchased a male beta 4 months ago and put him in a 10 gallon tank just for "pretty sake" because the tank is built into our wall. I followed all the online instructions for cleaning the tank along with how to make a fish happy. I have used NO real plants. The beta has since then in the last month developed a swollen belly. It seems almost see through when the light is on but the scales are still hanging on. I have been feeding it Beta flakes since day 1. 2 months ago I introduced a dwarf frog in the tank (online advised its ok). The frog died in 2 weeks. I fed it blood worms because (online advised) ok for frogs and Betas. Since then constant swelling to the point he seems like hes about to pop! I read to give him peas with out the covering. Please advise me what to do asap! For the sake of my Finley!

PS He did eat some dried blood worms!

Answer
Hi Amanda,
Feed him the pea, and nothing else for 24 hours.  He must waste.  Constipation leads to Swim Bladder Disease, and if left untreated will lead to Dropsy to which a cure is almost impossible.
Swim Bladder Disease is due to overfeeding, and poor diet.  A betta should have a varied diet.  Betta pellets one day, Betta Flakes the next, daphnia the next, glassworms, plankton flakes, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.  The more you vary, the healthier he will be, as he gets all the vitamins he needs in different food.  Feed him 2-3 times a day in small amounts once he is better.  Example..2 pellets or 2 flakes for one meal.  We must always remember that his tummy is the size of his eye.
If you see that his condition get worse, and that he does not waste, you will have to medicate him.  "Kanamycin" is very good for Swim Bladder Disease, but sometimes hard to find.  If you cannot find it, buy "Tetracycline" or "Furan-2"  Before medicating him, make sure your water chemistry is perfect.  This means, no ammonia, no nitrites, and nitrates should be low.  Do a 25% water change, and do not add aquarium salt.
I hope the little guy gets well soon.
