Question
Hi Lynda,
What is the best way to grow black molly fry in a 20 gallon fish tank?I have a breeders net with six baby fry in it. But I cannot go to the pet store because my parents aren't able to take me. What should I feed them, and should I let them out to swim with the adult mollies. The molly fry were born on January 13, 2010.
Thanks,
 TJ

Answer
Hi TJ,
Mollies should never be in a breeders net.  When the mother is pregnant, let her swim at ease in the tank, and have her fry.  Provide hiding places such as silk plants for the fry to hide.  Some will be eaten, but some will survive.  The fry know to hide from the parents, and other fish.   Mollies need lots of space to swim, and should never be put in a hatchery or breeding tank.  Just let nature take it's course.  The fry should be fed "baby brine shrimp" but you can only find this in the frozen section of the pet store.  Since you cannot go there, take the food you give the parents, and crush it until it is very very fine, like powder, and feed them.  Do water changes of 10% every day, and the fry will grow faster.  Feed the babies 4 times a day for the next two weeks.  Then feed them twice a day.  You will see, they will get bigger, and be able to fend for themselves.
I hope this helps.
Lynda
