betas water

Question
My son's beta just died.  2.5g tank with heater, she was the only one, had been fine alone in that tank (removed her for aggression from community tank) for several months.  Water chems fine, changed about half of water regularly, etc.  She got lethargic one day and 2 days later was dead.  Looking back, I've just realized I used a Vick's treatment in a humidifier in the room the tank was in.  I can't think of any other factor that was different from her normal environment.  Do you think the medication in the air could have affected her water?  I want to replace her, but need to know if I should move the tank the next time my son has a cold.

Answer
Hi Chris;

It's really hard to say. I've never had that happened but I guess it's possible. Fish can be pretty sensitive to airborne chemicals. Especially bettas because they take air from the surface. I think you are right about moving the tank to a different room when using the humidifier. It would be safer.

I hope your son's cold is better too. Maybe a new betta friend would help?
