Question
QUESTION: Hi
Today i just see a small white dot growing on the backside of my male betta swiming fin. His 2.5g tank (their also one female that live next door), water is clear, the temp is 78*F and filter and also a real potted plant. On the front side their is some kind of loose skin or something hanging loose(just a bit). What is this? What should i do to help him? I have Melafix, Fungus Cure, Kanamycin, and salt.

ANSWER: Quan,

Sorry to hear your Betta isn't well. Is sounds like maybe you have the beginning of Ich, or maybe a parasite. His heater need to be higher. They like to be in 82 degree water so I would turn the heater up a little everyday until it is at 82. You can also add some aquarium salt to his water since that will help with the Ich. In that tank I would remove the filter since Betta's don't need them and don't like the current that comes with them. Are you doing weekly water changes and testing of the water? If not, you need to start. Even though you have a filter, you still need to do the changes. I am not sure what his "swimming fin" is. Is it his dorsal fin, pelvic fin?? Is he eating well?  Even through the water is clear, if you are not testing it, it could be bad. Ammonia is a bad thing to have in the tank and that comes from the fish's waste. If after you raise the heater, do a 25% water change, add salt to his tank, 1 teaspoon per gallon of water, and add an antibiotic, and he doesn't seem better, let me know.

QUESTION: I change his water one per ten days and add AmQuel+. if he has a parasite or Ich should i treat it with Qickcure (Freshwater Antiparasitics) instead of a antibiotic? His filter is on low so there isn't alot of water movement. He is eating well. The dot is on his left pectoral fin. the temp is now 80*f. I think the white dot is eating a small hole though his pectoral fin causing a blue like stuff on the front of the fin. He can still use both of his fins to swim.

Answer
Quan,
Yea that would be good to do. Also, add some aquarium salt to his water. I wouldn't add more than a teaspoon of salt to 2.5 gallons. This should also help him along with the heater. When treating this it is good to get the heater up to about 86, no higher, but remember to add an air stone to his tank while the heater is set that high. Once he is better you can turn the heater back down to 82. To help prevent parasites, add a bit of salt to his water during every other water change. Remember to add the salt only to the new water being added in. Also, change 25% of his water every week, not 10 days.
