Question
I have recently started breeding budgerigars in an aviary and my first litters were more succesful than i thought! I no all about the parents pairing with chicks so i have decided to give them away to friends, but the only problem is that im not sure when to take the budgies away from the aviary and move them to my friends house. Could you please tell me how long i have to wait until i take the baby budgies out of the aviary after they have left the nest?

Answer
Hello Emily,

Each baby budgie is different. As soon as you see that the babies are able to eat seed and drink on their own and are not being fed by the parents at all, then you can give them away. This normally is between the ages of 5-6 1/2 weeks old. You wouldn't want the babies to starve because they cannot eat on their own, so it is better for them to be older than too young. But again, every budgie is different, so when you see they are eating and drinking on their own then give them away. Better to be safe than sorry!
