Do you have to wean a baby parakeet?

Question
I have a baby parakeet that was born October 6, 2006 and the mother and father are still feeding the baby and taking care of it but I have heard that I need to remove the baby from the cage of the mother and father and the other parakeets that are in there because it will kill the baby.  Is this true?  What do I need to do from here?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Kim! A baby keet or any bird for that matter needs to stay with its parents until it is fully weaned. If you remove the baby, serious problems can develop with the baby's nutrition. Other birds will only attack helpless chicks in the nestbox, but since this chick is almost fully grown they others will leave it alone. Keep the chick in with the parents until you notice that the chick is no longer getting feedings from the parents. Some chicks wean at a slower pace than others but not to worry, this is completely normal. If the other keets to present a problem then you can move them to a different cage. Until then let the baby wean from its parents on its own. good luck!
