putting new parakeets in cage with other parakeets

Question
One month ago I bought two parakeets and set up their cage next to another cage I have with 2 parakeets, one male and one female. At first everyone was quiet, but now they are all talking and seem to be at ease with each other. I would like to transfer the new parakeets, one boy and one girl (I think) into the large cage. What is your advice? Do you think its a good idea? What do pet shops do or others who have more than one parakeet?

Answer
Before mixing cages, you'll want to wait at least a month for a quarantine period.  That way, they won't be exposed to germs that they have no immunity to and get sick.

Whether or not its a good idea is a tricky issue.  On the one hand, they're very social, and like having lots of company.  But keep in mind, whenever you put budgies together, you have the chance of them breeding.  So only put them together if you think you can handle that responsibility, should it happen.

The easiest way to combine cages is to take a pillowcase, or other light cloth, and toss it over the bird.  Then, gently pick up the bird and move it into the new cage.  Keep in mind, for the first few days, things may be a bit stressful, and the new birds and the old birds may stay on opposite sides of the cage, but this awkwardness goes away after a little while.

Best of luck!
