Question
Hi Leah,
I just got a baby budgie a week ago, and i have no problems with him jumping on my hand, he is extremely friendly. My problem is that when i put him back in the cage he runs back and forth franicly in front of the door of the cage, he will do this all day until i take him out. When i do take him out, he likes to go to the front door and trys to fly up to it, his wings are clipped. Just not sure what to do its like he is stressed out till he wakes up in the morning until i put the towel over his cage for bed time. Do you have any ideas how i can settle him down while in the cage.

Answer
It sometimes takes a little while for budgies to get used to a new cage.  And if they're particularly attached to their owner, they are often reluctant to leave them. He's going to have to learn that the cage is his home.

Try leaving him in his cage with a radio or a TV on nearby so he doesn't feel lonely.  You may also want to get him a friend.  Baby budgies especially need social interaction.  He's young enough that for most of his life, he's been around his parents or siblings so much that being alone has become his greatest fear.  He seeks security and a friend which you provide him.  If he has another friend to play with, he might have some incentive to go back in the cage.

Best of luck!
