Question
hi i bought my female budgie about a month ago form a pet store (don't know how old she is) she seemed a little lonely so last week bought a male budgie from the same pet store they Seemed to have bonded extremely well. they cant go anywhere in or out of the cage without each other. They more or less are always touching they sleep on the same swing and preen each other. The thing is I'm not sure if they are mother and son as the male is a lot smaller than the female. how do i know this? and will they mate?

Answer
 Hi Laura,

The only way you will ever be able to tell if they are related to each other is to order a DNA kit from the many suppliers that are online. I would not waste the money though, the likelyhood that you bought a mother/son combo when shopping at a pet store on 2 different occasions is highly unlikely. I have budgies that are nearly twice the size of other budgies in the same aviary, and they are of no relation (I know this because I was the breeder). Genetics, health, everything plays a role in the size of a budgie/parakeet. The only way to know for sure if they will mate is to place them together and supply the proper breeding tools like a nest box. Most birds take to breeding fairly natural, it is something they are basically born with.
