Question
Hi!! I have a female about 7 year old pet parakeet and a male that we
have no idea how old he is. We have had them together in the same cage
for many years and they have never done any thing until yesterday when I
saw Hudine are male parakeet mating with her. Is it safe for her to breed
at this age? What should I do to prevent any complications? What should
I expect?
Thanks,
Hannah

Answer
Hello Hannah,

Parakeets will breed right up until their death. Make su re you provide plenty of cuttle bone or calcium supplements for your hen and allow her all of the millet that she wants while she is breeding. If you are not providing a nest box and she is not actively raising young, just give her cuttle bone for the calcium so that she does not become egg bound. Best of luck!
