Budgies Mating/Breeding

Question
QUESTION: hi, I came into the room one day and noticed that my bonded pair were
sitting on top of their cage and mating. This went on for about 10-20
seconds until one of the other male budgies came down to see what was
happening and the female went and scared him off. They didn't start up again
after that. It's a minute for her eggs to actually become fertile right? so how
do I try to make sure that they will mate again, hopefully successfully. I was
very shocked  and quickly made a "nesting box" from a Jumbo cereal box and
stuck it on top of the cage since they only have one door and i let them out
every day. They are both about 2 years old. In total there are 8 budgies and
six of them are bonded but this is the first time i have seen mating between
any of them. I don't think the others will mate because the females are
pushing off the males and seem more interested in watching the first timers.
Please Help me =] I really want this pair to be successful. !! =] Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Bryna!
Well, first of all. You need to get these two there own cage. In the event that the male has fertilized the females develouping egg inside her, and she lays the egg, and the egg hatches, the other parakeets will become curious and start wanting to go inside the nest, this will create MAJOR fighting between the mother, father, and the rest of the flock.

You need to get them there own cage soon, because its usually only a COUPLE days before she lays her egg and needs to sit on it to keep it at a constant temperature. Once you have gotten them their own cage, get them a nesting box. They should be nesting in a cereal box, they will eat right threw that. Mount it on the outsider prefferably, but if that is not possible put it on the inside of the cage.

If everything goes well, you should have some parakeet/budgie chicks on your hands within 18-30 days! =]

QUESTION: hi again, ok well i have them all in different cages. in total there are 4 cages
and 2 in each one. the cages only have 1 door. Now i will just be talking
about the pairs cage and just them.... so okay picture this a cage with two
budgies inside and a nesting box attaching to the only door. is this good or
should i do some other set up? Also I usually let them out so if i do this they
will be left in the cage is this okay? Finally this is about the other birds can i
let them out of their cages too or will this bother the two in the other cage
with the nesting box? Thank you very much!! =] Bryna

ANSWER: Hello Again Bryna.

You can block up the only door to the cage. It will be fine. You just wont be able to let them out of the cage they are in, which is best if they have chicks anyway to stay in the cage.
Make sure you still have access to the water and food bowls in the cage to change those when needed. [Water everyday!]
It will be fine to let the other birds out just as long as the other birds arent hoping on the nesting budgies cage and stressing the mother and father out.

Good Luck Bryna And Congrats!

QUESTION: hi!  so my pair is going in and out of the nesting box but the female still wont
let the male mate with her. Why is this? They have food, water, enough lighting,
and a sturdy place to mate. Also they have vitamins, and calcium bones, and
iodine blocks and everything they just wont mate any help please?? Thanks
Bryna

Answer
Hello Bryna.

They will mate with time. Everything has to be PERFECT for them. Also, the male doesnt usually go into the nest box until the female has laid, and is laying on, the eggs.

He will be going in and out to feed her when she needs.

Try giving them some fruits and veggies. They can eat everything but avocado.

Good Luck!
